Five Signs Your Operations Haven't Caught Up With Your Growth

Growth exposes operational gaps that were invisible at a smaller scale. Here's what to watch for.

Growth is a good problem — until the systems that worked at a smaller scale start to strain.

  1. Institutional knowledge lives in one person's head. If a key employee leaving would create a serious gap, your processes aren't documented well enough.
  2. Onboarding is improvised. New hires or volunteers piece together how things work instead of following a documented process.
  3. Decisions bottleneck at the top. Leadership is involved in decisions that should be handled at another level.
  4. Nobody can say what "done" looks like. Without measurable goals, it's hard to know whether initiatives are actually working.
  5. Technology is being asked to do more than it was set up for. Systems chosen for a five-person team are being stretched to support twenty-five.

None of these are fixed by working harder. They're fixed by revisiting how the organization operates.
